What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Helpful, Diverse, Great
What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
The classes I took that were probably my favorite would be English 92 and English
81. [They] really helped me write more essays and how to comprehend books a lot more.
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Jamie Treat [College and Career Readiness Instructor], he is my High School+ advisor
and he's really good at getting me the classes that I need to get my credits in.
How did you decide on a major?
I decided on majoring in business because I've always wanted to own my own salon and spa and dress boutique.
How do you find and build your community on campus?
The computer lab upstairs [in Sundquist Hall] because you can socialize with other students who are
on the same level as you [in High School+ courses]. And also, you can make more friends
that way, too.
How did starting in YVC’s College and Career Readiness Division help prepare you for transitioning into college-level courses?
[These courses] helped get me ready for the actual college classes. I probably would not have been able to start without these courses — especially when
it comes to math. I’ve always struggled with math. [The way the courses were taught]
made it easier to understand. Also, the teachers are always available to go to and
ask for help. It's really nice for me to know that teachers actually want to help
me. [Math] is really hard, but I'm understanding it better now.
How has Yakima Valley College changed you?
It's changed me for the better. It's helped me be more organized, work toward my diploma
and accomplish my goals.
What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
I would have to say getting close to getting my diploma.
What is your ultimate goal? Where would you like to end up?
My ultimate goal is to earn my business degree and then go to cosmetology school.
One day I want to own a salon, spa and dress boutique.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
Don't be afraid to ask for help.
