How did you decide on a major?
Growing up I observed a lack of Spanish-speaking accountants in my community who could
effectively assist local businesses with their financial management needs. This shortage
of bilingual accountants inspired me to major in accounting, as I am passionate about
bridging this gap and providing valuable financial expertise to Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs
in my community.
What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
Understanding accounting principles and practices is essential for developing a solid
foundation as a financial adviser and building a successful business. A thorough accounting
knowledge will provide me with the tools and insights necessary to effectively manage
finances, analyze financial data and make well-informed decisions to support the growth
and sustainability of my business.
Are you a first-generation college student? If so, what does earning your college
degree/certificate mean to you?
As a first-generation college student, obtaining a college degree was a significant
milestone for me. It symbolized my autonomy and displayed my ability to overcome challenges
through perseverance, efficient time management and seeking support to comprehend
complex concepts. I aim to serve as a role model for my children and family, illustrating
that they, too, can attain a college degree by emulating the strategic steps I undertook
to secure mine.
Did you know what academic pathway you wanted to pursue when you started at YVC? If
not, how did your advisor or YVC’s academic pathways help you decide?
When I started at YVC, I didn't have a clear idea about the pathway I needed to pursue my interests. Fortunately, my mentors played a crucial role in helping me identify my true passion and select the most suitable career path for me. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my career aspirations and ensuring that I am on track to achieve my professional goals.
What made you interested in studying at YVC?
The affordability of tuition and the proximity to my home and family initially caught
my attention and motivated me to consider studying at YVC.
Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
Transfer Club, Connection Bridge Club, College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP), Financial Literacy, Diversity Series and Student Government.
What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Challenge, Resources, Friendly
What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
Personal Finances [Math 101] was my favorite class. That class taught me how important
it is to have an order in my finances. I learned how to be a good administrator of
my money.
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Guadalupe Huitron-Lilly [Faculty Counselor] and Marivy Vasquez [CAMP Director] were
my mentors and both played a crucial role in helping me access the resources necessary
for my success as a student. They consistently supported me, addressing my queries
and assisting me in navigating the challenges of college life.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the quiet lounge [in Hopf Union Building], which has
recently changed to the activity room. I often see many students relaxing, playing pool, ping pong and chatting with other
students around the tables.
Were there any barriers you overcame to be successful at YVC? Please describe how
you overcame these.
One of the major obstacles I faced in achieving success at YVC was the language barrier.
To overcome this, I actively engaged in campus clubs and activities that necessitated
communication in English. Involvement in student government significantly boosted
my confidence in public speaking and facilitated effective communication with peers.
How has Yakima Valley College changed you?
Before enrolling at YVC, I lacked confidence speaking English and hesitated to engage
in public conversations. Additionally, I struggled to make friends due to my shyness.
However, I overcame these challenges after a few months at the college. I am now more
confident in forming friendships and speaking English in public.
Do you have a job? How do you work that into your schedule?
Currently I have a part-time job with a flexible work schedule.
What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
Being an advocate for all college students to have the opportunity to apply for the YVC Foundation Scholarship, regardless of their [immigration] status, has been my most significant achievement.
Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How
have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
CAMP provided me with the resources I needed for academic and financial support. Through
the clubs and student government, I have engaged with my peers and collaborated on
overcoming common challenges. Counseling services have been invaluable in helping me navigate personal challenges and seek the necessary
community support. The Financial Literacy and Diversity Series programs have given me insight into the efforts to ensure that all students feel
a sense of belonging within the college community. That helps me understand that there
is an excellent commitment in the college for the student's success. Last but not
least, the Math Center supported me with math homework and the library provided me with access to laptops, calculators and books.
Did you receive any financial aid or scholarship funding to attend YVC? If so, please
describe how this helped you on your journey.
I was blessed to receive financial aid, a YVC Foundation Scholarship and other scholarships. The financial support I receive from financial aid and scholarships
helps me to focus on learning, get good grades and have less stress about how I will
pay for my school expenses.
How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that
help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
I found a true sense of belonging after getting involved with the Connection Bridge Club. It was a place where I connected with many students experiencing similar challenges.
This community served as a valuable source of support for me, offering a place to
seek assistance and encouragement. After reaching my English level, I didn't know
the steps I needed to take to become a college student and the club helped me. The
different workshops offered by the club helped me to learn all the resources available to students at the college and I took
advantage of them to become a successful student.
What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
After completing my accounting degree, I want to achieve a bachelor's degree in business management. My dream is to become a financial adviser.
What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
One of the crucial pieces of advice I encourage for everyone who wants to be successful as a college student is to be involved in college activities and join a
club. Being part of the club helps you know about all the resources the college offers and
how to use them appropriately. Having an advisor who helps you schedule courses and
gives you tips for studying is another resource that I find essential. Lastly, maintaining
a positive mindset and perseverance is critical – never give up!
