A partnership between Yakima Valley College and Perry Technical Institute is creating a new pathway for students to strengthen their management skills while providing the region’s employers with the leaders they seek to sustain and grow their organizations.

The agreement between the institutions provides a streamlined path for students who complete Perry Tech’s Business Technology and Accounting Associate of Applied Science degree program to enter YVC’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Management (BASM) program. Students who have earned their associate degree from Perry Tech must complete two additional prerequisite classes, ENGL&101 (5 credits) and a Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning course (5 credits), with a “C” grade or higher and all admissions requirements to apply. Students in the process of completing prerequisite courses are welcome to apply for the BASM program. Accepted students are required to complete both core BASM requirements and general studies coursework.

“Our employers in the Yakima Valley have a need for managers who are the problem-solvers and leaders that organizations need in order to thrive,” said Herlinda Ruvalcaba, director of applied baccalaureate programs at YVC. “We’re pleased that our two institutions can partner to help meet this need and create a route for individuals who desire to take on leadership roles in a variety of industries or non-profit organizations.”

“We are excited to partner with YVC to offer our students the opportunity to continue building on the educational foundation that they have established at Perry Tech,” stated Nathan Hull, vice president of academic affairs at Perry Tech.  “Ultimately, we are here to help our students reach their goals in pursuit of their dream career. Providing an additional pathway for them in the Yakima Valley is something that I am very proud of.”

Perry Tech’s 1.5-year program covers office, computer, accounting and soft skills for entry-level positions from accounting assistants and bookkeeping to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to go into business for themselves. Students may acquire industry certifications on the way to earning their Associate of Applied Science degree.

YVC’s BASM program is application-oriented and includes coursework in marketing, operations and project management, human resources, entrepreneurship, financial management and more. The program is designed to accommodate working professionals, with a combination of in-person evening courses and online courses.

Applications for the BASM program are open annually from March 1 through May 31 to start in the fall quarter. Interested students can contact the BASM program at 509-834-4522 or BASM@yvcc.edu for more information.
