What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Informational, Community, Social

What’s your favorite class?
Biology has been my favorite class — that is what I want to go into — and it’s been cool learning about genetics and other topics.

What made you interested in studying at YVC in the Running Start program?
I was interested in Running Start to get a head start and see what it is like to go into college instead of going in blindly. I think it's a very good experience getting to know how professors teach their classes and what to expect when you go into college.

What impact did being a first-generation college student have on your experience?
Honestly, it's kind of scary not knowing. My family doesn't know what it was like, so [I feel like I’m] kind of going in blindly, but it's been working out well. I think just being able to talk to the professors and being able to communicate with them, knowing they will respond and give you the best feedback they can give you [has been helpful].

How did you decide on biology as a major?
It’s what I've wanted to do since I was little. I've always wanted to help people and going into that field [seemed like a good way to do that]. I feel like I’ll be very good at a fast pace environment, like an emergency room,  and that's what I like.

What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
Just to learn about every different aspect of biology. There's so many options, like microbiology, general biology, anatomy, etc. and everything is very, very detailed but very informational.

Are there any barriers that you’ve overcome to be successful at YVC?
Procrastination. I don't procrastinate as much [in college] because there are strict deadlines. I do sometimes [still procrastinate], but it's gotten better, and I don't wait until the very last minute anymore.

How has Yakima Valley College changed you?
It's changed my perspective on school — it's not always just about sitting through boring lectures— it's actually very engaging.

Do you have a job? How do you work that into your schedule?
Yes, I do have a job [at a local restaurant]. I take morning classes at the college and then I start work in the evening.

What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
I would say the work I've done, it's definitely improved, especially with English. I'm able to write [more] proficiently and it’s not as bland.

What is your ultimate goal? Where would you like to end up?
After I earn my bachelor’s degree I want to go to medical school. I’d like to work in an emergency room in a big city.

What advice do you have for prospective students?
Don't look back. Do not dwell on past grades. If you get a bad grade, it happens. You always have to keep going and achieve what you want to. Also, always ask questions. Asking questions is a big thing. You won't learn if you don't ask questions.

Do you have anything else you’d like to share with us about your experience at YVC?
[Going to YVC has] been a good experience. It's definitely helped me learn how to manage my time and be a good student.
