Yakima Valley College’s 2019-20 Diversity Series hosts the Black History 101 Mobile Museum’s 5th Element Hip Hop Exhibit on the Yakima Campus.
The 5th Element Hip Hop Exhibit is the exclusive 2020 thematic exhibit from the award-winning Black History 101 Mobile Museum. The exhibit features over 150 artifacts documenting the 40 plus year history of hip-hop culture. Among the exhibit highlights are the Top 10 sections of original material featuring the following: Top 10 Hip Hop Groups, Top 10 Women in Hip Hop, Top 10 Hip Hop Movies, Top 10 Pioneers, Top 10 G.O.A.T. Emcees, and Top 10 New School Artists. This exhibit will use artifacts from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Jim Crow, Civil Rights Movement and the Black Arts Movement to show how hip hop has drawn inspiration from the past to create a distinct cultural contribution that has a global impact on popular culture. Khalid el-Hakim is the founder and curator of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. Khalid has been called the “Schomburg of the Hip-Hop generation” because of his passionate commitment to carry on the rich tradition of the Black Museum Movement. Khalid has received national and international attention for his innovative work of exhibiting Black history outside of traditional museum spaces.
