Students enrolled in YVC’s bachelor of applied science in information technology networking-system administration (BASIT) program are now getting an opportunity to learn in a setting that mirrors a real-life workplace. Starting in winter quarter new simulation labs were created to support BASIT students.
“We had the idea for the simulation lab because the classroom layout did not work for application projects or collaboration projects,” states Information Technology Instructor David Dalton. “Students would get in each other’s way and cable management was a problem. We saw an opportunity to create a more functional environment and one that will more closely approximate what they will experience in a workplace environment.”
In addition to better functionality the new space allows for a more collaborative area for students to work together.
“This environment lets us do more application and collaboration projects that allow students to work together and to apply what they are learning. It also makes it easier for them to draw connections between what they are learning and how it will apply when they get into the work force,” continued Dalton.
As more classes return to hybrid and in-person formats the spaces will be used to support additional courses including those in information technology and business technology.
