Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Technology

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Technology Networking – System Administration (BASIT) degree is designed for students who have earned an applied associate’s degree and need a pathway to an applied bachelor’s degree. This pathway combines lower-division technical and transfer courses with upper-division credits in Information Technology, resulting in an application-oriented, four-year degree. Full-time students are generally able to complete the degree in as few as two years. Upon admission, students may start the program the following quarter.

Classes are offered during the evening, with each class occurring one time per week for two hours. Continued instruction and student interaction take place online.

This degree will broaden and deepen students’ foundational knowledge, adding general education, theory, advanced technical and professional skills, and integrative collaborating learning.

Program outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program the student should be able to:

• Analyze and develop recommendations for information systems administration in accordance with best practices and standards, legal and regulatory requirements, and ethical and social considerations including respect for privacy and intellectual property.
• Demonstrate effective communications, applying interpersonal and cultural awareness to business settings.
• Develop successful and respectful relationship with clients, co-workers, managers, and stakeholders, applying a wide range of adaptive and effective communication skills to convey complex technical concepts.
• Understand the place of information technology in an organization environment including alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

Tuition and Fees

Students in the  Bachelor of Applied Science program pay upper division tuition fees. Tuition is set by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges which acts upon legislative authority. Rates are subject to change.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have the following:

1. Hold an associate degree (AAS or AA) from a regionally accredited institution
   • or 90 college-level credits from a regionally accredited institution
2. Minimum cumulative college-level GPA of 2.5
3. Eligible for Math 93 or 95
4. Eligible for English& 101

Priority consideration will be given to students who have completed:

• IT 110 – Computer Programming Introduction (5 credits)
• IT 140 – Network Fundamentals (5 credits)
• IT 145 – Advanced Microsoft Windows (5 credits)
• IT 146 – Windows Server (5 credits)
• IT 149 – Windows PowerShell Scripting (2 credits)
• IT 211 – Cisco I – Introduction to Networks (6 credits)
• IT 212 – Cisco II – Switching, Touring, and Wireless Essentials (6 credits)
• IT 225 – Database Advanced (5 credits)
• A minimum grade of “C” (2.0 GPA) must be achieved in the above courses.

Though the following courses are not required for eligibility, these courses are required to graduate from the program. Most of these courses are acquired throughout the applicant’s associate degree program. Courses not completed will be included in the applicant’s Education Plan, which may extend program duration. These courses must have distribution and must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better.

• Communications course (5 credits)
• Quantitative / symbolic reasoning course (5 credits)
• Humanities course (10 credits)
• Natural science courses (5 credits)
• Natural Science lab science (5 credits)
• Social science courses (10 credits)
• Distributed Electives that fall into Communication, Quantitative, Humanities, Social Science or Natural Science (15 credits)
• A minimum grade point average of “C” (2.0) must be achieved in the above courses.​​

Steps to apply

Admission Deadlines

Fall

• 1^st (priority) Deadline – Last Friday in June
• 2^nd Deadline – Last Friday in August

Winter

• First Monday in November (Extended to November 30)

Spring

• Last Friday in January

Step 1

• Review all entrance requirements. If you feel you qualify, continue to the next step. If you have questions about your eligibility please email BASIT@yvcc.edu or call 509.834.4522.

Step 2

• Complete the YVC Application. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee. Application is waived if you have been a student in the last twelve months.
• Submit all sealed official transcripts from previous colleges

Step 3

• Complete and submit the BASIT Admissions Application​. This application is free.

Step 4

If funding is needed apply for FASFA/WAFSA.  FASFA/WAFSA opens for applications on October 1 for the upcoming academic year.

Step 5

Take the placement exam (if needed).  Placement testing is only required for students who have not taken a Math and English course and do not have a current placement exam on file.  Placement scores expire after two years.

Final Admission Decision

• All applications will be admitted on a rolling admission basis, depending on space availability.
• Admission decisions will be determined after the application deadline.
• Applicants will be ranked on a grading rubric using the required criteria in the entrance requirements section.
• Personal essays are not used in the selective admission process. However, they are used to understand the student’s perspective of their current interest or skills in the field of IT.  Among equally qualified applicants, admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. ​
