I-Best Phlebotomy Program
Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) programs offer an opportunity for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students to start a certificate or degree sooner, with extra support. Start on a career pathway leading to higher wages and opportunities while improving your academic skills.
Program Information
Phlebotomy is an exciting entry-level healthcare career that provides ample employment opportunities and excellent exposure to the many areas of the healthcare industry. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients for testing and medical procedures. Student phlebotomists are learning how to safely collect blood samples from patients. They practice techniques like drawing blood from veins and fingers, first on models and then under supervision in real healthcare settings. They also study professional communication, safety protocols, and proper documentation. As they gain experience, they work directly with patients, ensuring comfort and following safety procedures while collecting blood samples for testing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists Washington as a top paying state for Phlebotomists with an average hourly wage of $24.42 or about $50,800 annually. In addition to the Phlebotomy certificate, students earn a Washington State Department of Health Credential and certifications in First Aid, Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and seven hours of Blood-Borne Pathogen (BBP) training.
