About Zach
I started my college journey at a community college in Arizona, where I grew up. I was fortunate to have several amazing instructors who deepened my interest in science and set me firmly on a path towards a degree in STEM. Ever since then, I've wanted to teach at a community college. I believe strongly in the value of a well-rounded, liberal arts education and that all students, regardless of major or career interest, need to have a solid understanding of how science works and how it is relevant to their lives.
My courses cover a range of topics, including astronomy, geology, meteorology, and
climate science. These disciplines offer a chance for students to investigate many
of the most important issues facing the Pacific Northwest today, from climate change
to earthquakes to volcanic eruptions. Our community is stronger when we all understand
our place in the Universe and the many ways in which the Earth shapes our landscapes,
lives, and homes.
Students should take my classes if they want a fun, challenging, and active classroom
environment. Most of my classes utilize a hybrid, flipped classroom model. This means
that students have the flexibility to complete "lectures" online at a time convenient
for them, while reserving class time for hands-on labs and engaging discussions.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and newborn son, hiking, backpacking, travelling, playing basketball, and photography. You can often find me volunteering for Cowiche Canyon Conservancy, the Yakima Valley Astronomy Club, or Yakima County Search & Rescue.
