About John Paul

I am proud to be part of the faculty at Yakima Valley College, where I have the privilege of teaching American Sign Language and working to support a welcoming, inclusive environment for our students. I’m passionate about ASL as both a language and a bridge to greater cultural understanding, and I find immense joy in helping students explore this new world of communication.

In my classes, I strive to create an atmosphere that is both engaging and supportive. I believe learning ASL goes beyond vocabulary—it’s about connecting with the Deaf community and appreciating the richness of Deaf culture. Students can expect a mix of hands-on practice, interactive activities, and discussions that bring the language to life. I encourage questions and foster an environment where mistakes are simply part of the learning journey.

I also see my role as extending beyond the classroom. In addition to teaching ASL, I’m dedicated to fostering awareness of Deaf sensitivity and accessibility. I hope students leave my classes with a greater understanding of the unique challenges faced by Deaf individuals in our communities and the role they can play in creating more inclusive spaces.

Outside of my work at YVC, I am continuously exploring new ways to grow professionally. I am committed to the ethics of interpreting and regularly engage in professional development to stay current in the field. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my blended family, hiking, and road trips—activities that keep me inspired and ready to bring new energy to my students.

I am excited to welcome students into this journey of discovery at YVC, and I look forward to guiding them as they learn, grow, and gain the skills to connect with others in meaningful ways.
