About Dr. Murphy
I enjoy working with the students at YVC because I can relate to a lot of them. My journey into higher education began at a college very similar to YVC. I went to night school while supporting myself and working full time. Much like the students here, I knew I had to work harder than most if I wanted a better career and security for my family. Let me tell you, the journey was worth it. I love the students at YVC because I can see how hardworking they are, and how much they want to succeed. That drive and determination is a key that will open so many doors. I get to wake up everyday and help students achieve their personal and professional goals. It doesn’t get much better than that.
In my classes, I help students develop a writerly toolbox with techniques and methods to help with any writing endeavor. I also emphasize voice and confidence. This serves students throughout their academic careers, but also helps when they are on the job market and into their professional careers. Even more than that, my classes help students develop a critical eye, which allows for a more complex understanding of the world around them. I focus on process over product, so my courses are designed for students of all levels. By integrating pop culture phenomena and technology, I keep the conversation and method of delivery current.
I studied English and Creative Writing. My specialty is fiction and poetry. I also have research specialty in contemporary fiction, queer literature, Native American literature, representations of the feminine bildungsroman, and the othered body. I enjoy fishing, camping, gardening, cooking, and, of course, reading. Halloween is my favorite holiday. My cat's name is Journey. She's, "just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world." T. Petty. If you know, you know.
