YVC Automotive Service Technology (AST) student Isaac Rivera was selected for an intensive training program this summer. Rivera will take part in the 16-week Tesla START program held at Shoreline Community College.
Tesla START provides individuals across the U.S., like Rivera, with the skills necessary for a successful career at Tesla and beyond. During the program, students develop technical expertise and earn certifications through in-class theory, hands-on labs and self-paced learning.
The knowledge Rivera gained through YVC’s program has helped prepare him for this advanced training.
“The AST program has given me a solid foundation in vehicle diagnosis and repair, the use of hand and power tools, and a knowledge of electrical systems and the theory behind them,” says Rivera. “I have also learned a lot from SkillsUSA — in terms of learning how to conduct myself in a professional environment and knowing how to present myself to future employers.”
Following successful completion of the Tesla START program, Rivera hopes to be offered a permanent position with Tesla.
“This internship means a lot to me,” said Rivera. “Prior to enrolling in the AST program I was not doing well academically, to the point where I was put on academic suspension. I really have turned my academic career around from where I was a few years ago. I went from being an underachieving student to being the president of the GearHeads Automotive Club and being scouted by companies like Boeing and Tesla. I am very proud of myself.”
Students in the Tesla START program also learn enhanced soft skills and team-based repair practices.
