Students are at the center of everything we do at Yakima Valley College. From our faculty who design their classes to be highly engaging and culturally relevant to our staff members who provide a wide array of support services, we’re dedicated to helping students succeed in their academics and in life.

Centering students is an integral part of the college’s current strategic plan and the daily work that we do. In the Fall 2023 edition of YVC, this commitment shows up in many of our stories. We explore how the college’s radiologic sciences program, by providing students with hands-on clinical experiences, has helped MultiCare Yakima Memorial fill essential staffing needs and raised the quality of care for our entire community. In another article, we focus on three students who have taken unique paths to leadership roles in YVC student government.

This fall, the college also is grateful to have our efforts reinforced by the award of two major, multiyear federal grants. The first, a nearly $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, will help YVC advance student-centered career-readiness programs, create more leadership opportunities for students, and support student wellness. The second, a $1 million National Science Foundation grant, will support the retention and graduation of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students from historically underrepresented populations. Together, these grants will allow us to improve the experience that every student has at YVC.

Thank you for reading our fall edition and being part of the YVC community. With your support, we will continue centering the hopes and dreams of students during their education at Yakima Valley College.

Sincerely,

Linda Kaminski, Ed.D.
