Yakima Valley College might not turn 100 until 2028, but a dedicated group of current and former faculty and staff isn't waiting until the last minute to celebrate. Led by retired Athletic Director Jerry Ward, they've embarked on a unique mission – to uncover the hidden stories within the college's walls.
Ward sees the centennial celebration as a way to showcase YVC's lasting impact on the Yakima Valley. "YVC has provided educational and cultural opportunity for generations," he says, "from quality instruction to enriching experiences like plays, musicals and sports."
The committee's quest extends beyond the brick and mortar. They are seeking photographs, anecdotes, artifacts and memorabilia that capture the spirit of YVC and could be used in a collaborative exhibit at the Larson Gallery. Former students and staff are encouraged to dig through family albums and dusty yearbooks, unearthing memories that paint a fuller picture of the college's evolution.
“This early dive into YVC's past promises a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be woven together,” said Ward. “It's not just about celebrating a milestone; it's about honoring the legacy that continues to shape the Yakima Valley.”
