Academic Tests

Advanced Placement (AP)

High school students who have participated in the Advanced Placement Program during high school or have developed an equivalent background through self-initiative may take tests offered by the College Board each year during the month of May, and scores will be reported to three colleges of the student’s choice. The student must have successfully completed one quarter at YVC before advanced placement credit will be placed on the transcript. Scores in computer science, economics, and music may also be submitted and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

ACT/SAT Placement

The goal of placement is to assess skills to ensure students are able to successfully engage with course content and have the best chances at passing the course. Many students now take both the ACT and SAT. Once you have your test scores, you need to determine which scores will benefit you more in the college placement process.

About ACT/SAT

The ACT and SAT are entrance exams used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The idea (in theory, at least) is to provide colleges with one common criterion that can be used to compare all applicants. However, it is just one factor in the admissions decision. Schools also consider your high school GPA, and academic transcripts.

College-Level Examination Program

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations are based on undergraduate courses offered during the first two years of college study. They are developed by college instructors for the purpose of awarding college credit. Like end-of-course examinations, CLEP exams demand comprehensive subject knowledge. Some CLEP examinations may yield credit at YVC when satisfactory performance levels are reached.

About CLEP

Successfully completed CLEP examinations receive 'S' grades. Several YVC degrees and certificates limit the total number of 'S' grades, so it is important to speak with an advisor about taking CLEP examinations. CLEP credits may also be limited to general electives depending on a student's degree plan. Students must successfully complete one quarter at YVC before CLEP credits will be placed on their transcript.

To schedule a CLEP exam, call YVC's Testing Services at 509.574.4738.

Dantes Standardized Subject Test (DSST)

DANTES Standardized Subject Test (DSST) examinations are based on undergraduate courses offered during the first two years of college study. They are developed by college instructors for the purpose of awarding college credit. Similar to CLEP examinations, DSST exams demand comprehensive subject knowledge. DSST examinations yield credit at YVC when satisfactory performance levels are reached.

Successfully completed DSST examinations receive ‘S’ grades. Several YVC degrees and certificates limit the total number of ‘S’ grades, so it is important to speak with an advisor about taking DSST examinations. Students must successfully complete one quarter at YVC before DSST credits will be placed on their transcript. If the DSST class does not match a YVC class, credit will be granted as elective credit in the distribution area listed.

About DSST

If experience is the world's greatest teacher, then your experiences may well qualify you for college credit. The nationally recognized DSST Program helps you receive college credits for learning acquired outside the traditional classroom through a suite of more than 30 exams in college subject areas such as Social Sciences, Math, Applied Technology, Business, Physical Sciences and Humanities.

A form of prior learning assessment, DSSTs offer students a cost effective, time saving way to use their knowledge acquired outside of the classroom (perhaps from reading, on-the-job training, or independent study) to accomplish their educational goals.
