Morrison, Stickney lead YVCC rout

Chelsie Morrison scored 23 points, and Tana Stickney had 17 as Yakima Valley wore down shorthanded South Puget Sound 95-74 in the Yaks' home opener Saturday at Sherar Gym.

The win improved YVCC to 6-1 for the season.

Morrison, a 6-foot sophomore, made 5 of 6 3-point shots. Stickney was 5 for 11 overall and 1 for 2 from long distance.

Andrea Blodgett added 13 points and Whitney Honn had 11 for the Yaks, who trailed 46-43 at halftime.

South Puget Sound had only six available players because of injuries, YVCC coach Cody Butler said.

"I'll tell you what the difference in the game was," Butler said. "We started Misty Hansen in the second half and she just made pinpoint passes against their zone. She found the right people."

The score was still close near the eight-minute mark, Butler said, but YVCC staged a decisive run with Morrison and Stickney doing much of the scoring.

Yakima Valley committed only 10 turnovers in the game, shot 37 percent from 3-point range and made 11 of 14 free throws.

The Yaks are scheduled for another home game next Saturday against Shoreline.
