Blodgett guides YVCC to win in league opener
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

MOSES LAKE — On a night in which they neither shot well nor played fast, Yakima Valley's women nonetheless found a way to win.

Andrea Blodgett scored 21 points and the Yaks claimed their Eastern Region opener, 76-64 over Big Bend on Wednesday night.

The victory was the Yaks' 10th straight and ran their record to 15-1.

"It was kind of a grind-it-out type of game," YVCC coach Cody Butler said. "We didn't shoot very well."

Yakima Valley, which typically plays at a rapid pace, offset 37 percent shooting by forcing 27 turnovers and outrebounding the Vikings 50-39 — including 22-8 at the offensive glass.

Chelsie Morrison totaled 11 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, including six offensive boards, reserve Taitum Dixey had 11 points and eight rebounds and Lisa Bishop had 11 points.

Blodgett was 7 for 16 from the field, including 4 for 10 from 3-point range, and had three steals.

Ahead 33-30 at halftime, YVCC saw Big Bend score the first basket of the second half before a Blodgett 3-pointer ignited a 10-1 run.

The Vikings used a full-court press to reduce a 15-point lead to six with 6:32 to play, but Blodgett connected on another long ball and then followed with a 2-pointer, and Yakima Valley's advantage stayed in double digits the rest of the way.

"Big Bend was trying to slow it down because they're not quite as athletic as we are," Butler said. "When we slow down, it throws us off our rhythm. They used a press on us, but after awhile Andi Jo started dribbling right through it without too much harm and got a couple of easy baskets."

YVCC's depth was a factor, with the Yaks' reserves outscoring Big Bend's 24-15.

Cisca Moore led the Vikings with 14 points.

Yakima Valley will continue region play Saturday at Spokane before returning to Sherar Gym on Jan. 10 against Walla Walla.
