YVCC Clinches Playoff Berth

Most first-year programs are happy with modest goals and accomplishments.

Yakima Valley Community College's fledgling women's soccer program probably fell into that category when this season began.

But Saturday, following the Yaks' 1-0 victory over Highline at Chesterley Park, they have quite a bit more to celebrate as they also clinched a playoff berth.

"When I think about the whole situation, I'm fortunate to have the group I have," coach Luiz Machado said.  "I give all the credit to the girls.  They've done and awesome job"

"Everyday, they never give up.  They play with heart and passion.  It's just amazing."

Just as important, Saturday's victory vaulted YVCC (6-6-4) past Highline into second place in the West Division.  The Yaks are three points ahead of Highline, which still has matches left against Spokane and Wall Walla, probably the top two NWAACC teams.

YVCC finishes with road matches Wednesday at Tacoma and next Saturday against Olympic.  Should the YAks hold onto second place, they would earn a home match in the first round of the playoffs.

YVCC put itself  in the drivers seat Saturday, with Erika Eichler's first-half goal being the difference.  Her goal, off an assist from Nikki Spurgin came in the seventh minute.

Elida Licea made four saves to record the shutout.
